Consumer Unit Upgrade in Willingham

The Brief

A family home in Willingham was still running on an old fuse board with no RCD protection. The previous board had reached the end of its life and no longer met the level of protection expected on a modern installation. The homeowner wanted a safe, up to date consumer unit that would guard every circuit individually and protect their electronics from surges, along with a clear record of how the home is wired.

What We Did

My work included:

• Assessed the existing installation: I inspected the old fuse board and wiring, isolated the supply safely, and confirmed the scope of the upgrade before starting any work.
• Removed the old consumer unit: The ageing board was disconnected and removed, and each circuit was checked and labelled ready for the new installation.
• Installed a new RCBO consumer unit: A modern board with an individual RCBO on every circuit, so a fault on one circuit no longer takes out the rest of the home.
• Added surge protection: A surge protection device was fitted to help shield sensitive electronics and appliances from voltage spikes.
• Tested and certified: I carried out full testing on every circuit and issued the relevant certification, so the installation meets current standards.
• Produced a CAD circuit diagram: I drew up a clear, labelled CAD diagram of the home's circuits for the homeowner to keep, making future work and fault finding far simpler.

The Result

A safer, fully protected installation. Every circuit is now individually protected by its own RCBO, surge protection is in place for the household's electronics, and the whole installation has been tested and certified to current standards. The homeowner also keeps a clear, labelled CAD circuit diagram of their home, so they always have an accurate record of how everything is wired.

Job Duration: Approximately one day from assessment to final testing, certification, and handover of the circuit diagram.
