The Brief

A homeowner near Cambridge had just bought a new electric vehicle and wanted a proper home charge point fitted so they could charge safely and conveniently on their own driveway. They wanted the job done correctly and to a professional standard, with the charger running from a dedicated circuit rather than being tacked onto existing wiring. As a NAPIT-registered electrician, I was able to take on the full installation and certify it on completion.

What We Did

The installation involved:

• Assessed the existing supply: I checked the incoming supply and the consumer unit to confirm there was enough spare capacity to add a 7kW charger safely, and looked at the earthing arrangement before starting any work.
• Planned a tidy route: I worked out the neatest cable route from the board to the chosen charger position, keeping the run discreet and out of the way while remaining easy to inspect.
• Ran a dedicated circuit: Rather than spurring off existing wiring, I ran a new dedicated circuit from the consumer unit with the correct protection for an EV charge point, so the charger has its own supply and protection.
• Fitted the charger neatly: The charge point was mounted securely at a sensible height with a clean, tidy cable run, so it looks the part and is comfortable to use day to day.
• Tested and certified: I carried out full testing on the new circuit, confirmed the protective devices operated correctly, and issued the certification for the completed installation.
• Handed over: I showed the homeowner how the charger works and left them with a safe, reliable point ready for everyday charging.

The Result

The homeowner has a safe, reliable home EV charger, installed properly on its own dedicated and correctly protected circuit. The work was completed neatly, tested thoroughly and fully certified, so the charge point is ready for years of everyday use.

Job Duration: The assessment, dedicated circuit, charger fitting, testing and certification were completed in a single visit.
